About Us


April Harris-Britt, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist specializing in child, adolescent, and family issues. She received her doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has trained in a variety of clinical settings including UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, the Orange-Person-Chatham Mental Health Center, the Center for Development and Learning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and several area school systems. Dr. Harris-Britt completed her internship in the Department of Psychiatry at the UNC School of Medicine, where her major rotations were in Pediatric Psychology, Child/Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry, Child Maltreatment, and the TEACCH Center.

In addition to providing child, adolescent, family, and group therapy, Dr. Harris-Britt conducts psychological evaluations, developmental assessments, and consultations with schools, the courts, and medical practices. She utilizes a systems approach to wellness that incorporates developmental, psychological, and social strengths in assessment and treatment. She prefers to use child-centered, play therapy with children. Dr. Harris-Britt is also trained in many evidence-based models including Trauma-focused CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and EMDR. Specific areas of focus include reunification therapy, foster-care and adoption, Asperger’s Disorder, mediation regarding custody, and trauma.

She is an active member of the American Psychological Association, the North Carolina Psychological Association, the Society for Research in Child Development, and the Association for Play Therapy. She is actively engaged in teaching and research, some of which has been featured on CNN, in Newsweek, on local TV and radio, and in the NY Times Bestseller, NurtureShock. She maintains an appointment as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Amy Johnson, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist specializing in working with children, adolescents, couples, and families. She received her doctorate from the University of North Carolina a t Chapel Hill. Dr. Johnson completed her internship at the Center for Multicultural Training in Psychology at Boston University School of Medicine. Her major rotations there were Inpatient Forensic Psychology, Child Outpatient Psychiatry, and the HIV/AIDS clinic. She has trained in a variety of clinical settings including public school systems, community mental health centers, inpatient psychiatric hospitals and outpatient mental health clinics.

Dr. Johnson's professional interests include community mental health, multicultural psychology, and family systems. She is currently an active member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Network for Multiculturally-Trained Professionals (NMTP), the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), and the APA Minority Fellowship Program (MFP).

Dr. Johnson provides individual and group psychotherapy, parent training, psychological evaluations and assessments, as well as consultation to schools, medical facilities and related agencies. She approaches assessment and treatment from a strength-based perspective, often relying heavily on a systems approach. She also approaches treatment from a variety of psychological orientations based on her clients' needs, including the integration of spirituality.

Dr. Robin H. Exum-Calhoun provides individual and family therapeutic services to children, adolescents and adults from diverse backgrounds. In practice for more than 10 years, Dr. Exum-Calhoun has worked for public and private outpatient clinics, inpatient units, therapeutic high schools and for public and private school systems in New York and New Jersey. She has been in private practice for eight years. Dr. Exum-Calhoun also provides training and consultative services to mental health agencies.

Dr. Exum-Calhoun received her BA (Psychology and Education) from Dartmouth College, and her Masters and PsyD from New York University where she later worked as a Professor of Psychology, teaching and supervising doctoral students. Dr. Exum-Calhoun has also taught at other educational institutions on both undergraduate and graduate levels, and is currently a Part Time faculty member at Capella University. Dr. Exum-Calhoun completed a clinical internship at Elizabeth General Medical Center, in Elizabeth, NJ, where she engaged in clinical outpatient work with children, adolescents, adults, families, and group psychotherapy with children, adolescents and adults; clinical inpatient work with children and adolescents; clinical and school psychological assessment; and mental health consultation work with a variety of agencies including the Elizabeth School District.

Throughout her professional career and through her research, Dr. Robin Exum-Calhoun’s clinical focus has been on helping children, adolescents and young adults make the successful transition to independent living by attaining academic success and on addressing the issues and disorders that sometimes make this path difficult. Her specialty is helping children, teenagers, adults and their families overcome barriers to growth, and attain academic achievement by ensuring strong mental health. Another major emphasis of her work has been with helping adults cope with mental health concerns that often develop due to life stressors they face brought on by relationship issues, work concerns and family problems.

Dr. Exum-Calhoun provides individual and family psychotherapy utilizing psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and solution focused techniques. She has recently been trained in EMDR. Dr. Exum-Calhoun is a Christian and also incorporates spirituality in her clinical work with clients seeking this type of intervention.

Cortney Weissglass, Psy.D., is a provisionally licensed clinical psychologist specializing in working with children, adolescents, and families. She received her doctorate from the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University/Washington, D.C. and is currently supervised by Dr. Harris-Britt. Dr. Weissglass completed her internship locally at Central Regional Hospital. Her major rotations were in child/adolescent inpatient psychiatry, child/adolescent outpatient psychiatry, and forensic outpatient psychiatry services at UNC. She has trained in a variety of clinical settings including the public school system, community mental health centers, intensive in-home services, residential treatment centers, and inpatient psychiatric hospitals.

Dr. Weissglass provides child, adolescent, family, and group therapy, as well as parent training. She also conducts psychological evaluations and consultation with schools. She approaches treatment and assessment from a strengths-based perspective and integrates a variety of psychological orientations. She prefers to use child-centered play therapy with children and is trained in evidence-based models including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and EMDR.

She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), APA's Society for Family Psychology, APA's Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, and the North Carolina Psychological Association (NCPA).

Amy Fairchild, M.D., is a board certified adult psychiatrist who sub-specializes in the treatment of child and adolescent challenges. Dr. Fairchild's areas of expertise is in treating anxiety, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity, and oppositional/conduct disturbances. Dr. Fairchild is passionate about the "whole" child, taking a comprehensive, collaborative approach when treating today's pediatric challenges.

A native of North Carolina, Dr. Fairchild earned her medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine in 1988. She then completed her residency and fellowship training in 2003 at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in adult, child and adolescent psychiatry, respectively.

Rob Danzman, MS, NCC, LPC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor. He earned his undergraduate at Warren Wilson College and his Master's degree in Community Counseling from Western Carolina University. He is a National Certified Counselor and a Certified Financial Social Worker. Rob's graduate work focused on Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Counseling Affluent Populations. He has worked in residential programs, day treatment, and community based services for 10 years.

Robert Fields, MA, LPA is a Licensed Psychological Associate who received his Bachelor's degree in Psychology at East Carolina University and his Master's degree in Psychology with a Clinical concentration at North Carolina Central University. Robert has worked with clients of all ages and specializes in working with teens, young adults, and families. Robert's clinical interests include anger management, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, oppositional defiant and conduct disorder, depression, anxiety, and stress management. Robert emphasizes a holistic approach that is both research and practice-driven.

Keshawna Solomon, MA, LPA is a Licensed Psychological Associate. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and African American studies. She completed her Master's in Psychology with a Clinical Concentration, from North Carolina Central University. She has 7 years of experience working with adults who have Autism through Division TEACCH at UNC-Chapel Hill. Ms. Solomon conducts psychological evaluations, psycho-educational testing, developmental assessments, and consultations with schools. She also provides therapy to young children and adolescents, largely utilizing play therapy techniques. Her areas of clinical interest include trauma, anger management, and family systems. Her research interests include racial socialization, parental involvement, achievement motivation, and how these issues are related to academic outcomes in minority children. She is an active member of the American Psychological Association and the North Carolina Psychological Association.

R. Harald Petrini, MA, LPC, NCC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor. He earned his M.A. degree in Professional Counseling at Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas in 2001, years after earning both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geology and deciding to change careers to focus on his true passion, which is to help people to heal from the wounds of their past. Harald was born in Guatemala and is completely fluent in Spanish. He has extensive experience counseling adults, couples and young children. His major interests includes grief and loss, Christian/spiritually based counseling, child-centered play therapy, culturally competent bilingual counseling with the Latino population (adults and children), and working with both affluent as well as low income clients. Harald's approach to counseling is eclectic, utilizing psychodynamic principles as well as cognitive-behavioral techniques to help clients understand the root causes of the distress they may be experiencing, to help them to make sense of these circumstances and to move forward into health and wholeness.

Geoffrey Zeger, ACSW, LCSW, provides counseling and psychotherapy to children, adults, couples and families. He received his Masters of Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work. Licensed since 1992, Geoff has worked with a wide range of clients with a variety of presenting needs. His focus is working with children (attention difficulties, self-harm, acting out, teenage and childhood depression and anxiety, and incorporating step-parents into families). Geoff's prior experience includes work with juvenile sex offenders, Willie M. children, Director of a Crisis Team, work with a mental health team at Ground Zero (9-11), and out-of-state work with soldiers returning from Iraq.

Lauren Thomason, MA, LPCA is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate who received her Master's in Counseling from Asbury Theological Seminary. She holds a Bachelor's degree in both Psychology and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Lauren and is in the process of becoming a Registered Play Therapist. As a member of the Association for Play Therapists she uses play therapy as a means to overcome difficulties children face. Her post-graduate counseling experience includes working with children in foster care placement, anxiety, adjustment disorders, and behavioral issues. She also has experience in Career Counseling with university students.

Janice McGilberry, MS, LPCA, CRC, CFLE is a Licensed Professional Counselor- Associate specializing in working with children, adolescents, and adults. She obtained a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology and a Bachelor's of Science in Family and Community Service from East Carolina University. She received her Master's of Science degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a specialty track in developmental disabilities and a particular interest in autism spectrum disorders. Janice completed her practicum and internship under the supervision of Dr. April Harris-Britt and Dr. Amy Johnson. She is also a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), who is trained to conduct vocational assessments and career counseling and as a Certified Family Life Educator-provisional (CFLE), who works to enhance family dynamics from a systems approach by addressing many societal issues that either directly or indirectly impact families. Janice is also pursuing licensure as a Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA). Her professional interests include individual and group counseling, social and adaptive skills training, mental health disparities, multicultural issues, and resiliency amongst at-risk youth. Janice assists with psychological evaluations and psychoeducational testing.

Kira Capano, MS, CRC, LPCA is a Licensed Professional Counselor- Associate specializing in working with children, adolescents, and adults. She graduated from Catawba College with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She completed her Master’s of Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a specialty track in developmental disabilities. Her thesis title was “Social Implications of Childhood and Adolescent Autism”. She has experience working with adults and children with autism in a residential and school setting. She completed her practicum and internship under the supervision of Dr. April Harris-Britt. Kira is also a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), who is trained to conduct vocational assessment and career counseling. Her clinical interests include Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, autism spectrum disorders, depression, anxiety, stress, and the impact of medical illnesses on the individual and their families. In addition to providing therapy, Kira assists with psychological evaluations and psychoeducational testing.

Jamie Morehart MS, CRC, LPCA, LCAS-P is Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and Provisionally Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor. She earned her undergraduate degree in Applied Psychology from North Carolina Stated University and her master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her graduate work included working with dual-diagnosis disorders in adolescents and adults. Jamie has had experience interning at a methadone maintenance facility and for an ACT team.

Kira Royal, MA obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then completed her Master's in Psychology with a Clinical Concentration, from North Carolina Central University. Currently, she is an applicant with the North Carolina Psychology Board to obtain her License as a Psychological Associate. Mrs. Royal conducts individual therapy, psycho-educational testing, clinical assessments, and psychological evaluations. Her professional interests include individual and group counseling relating to trauma and family systems. Her research interests include parental involvement, social support, parental stress, and how these factors impact child behavioral outcomes for minority children. She is an active member of the American Psychological Association and the North Carolina Psychological Association.

Venetta Wells MA obtained her Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Master's in Psychology with a Clinical Concentration from North Carolina Central University. Ms. Wells’ thesis title was “The Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Substance Abuse, and Perceived Social Support on Recidivism Rates among African American Males”. Her research interests include perceived social support, recidivism rates, motivation, and how these issues are related to social outcomes for minorities. Currently, she is an applicant with the North Carolina Psychology Board to obtain her License as a Psychological Associate. She assists with psychological evaluations, psycho-educational testing, and developmental assessments. Her areas of clinical interest include trauma, anger management, and family systems. She is an active member of the American Psychological Association.

Diana Tursi, BA, ITFS, CPE-II graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in psychology in 2005. She works as a developmental therapist, providing play therapy for children ages birth to three. Diana also works with older children (elementary and middle schoolers) diagnosed with ADHD, teaching coping mechanisms and educational strategies. She has received both Play Attention and BrainTrain certifications, and is qualified to facilitate computerized training to improve memory, attention, and other cognitive skills. Diana also conducts social skills and study skills groups for children and adolescents. She is also a credentialed parenting educator, and conducts individual and group sessions focusing on parenting strategies and skills. Diana's professional specialties include autism, ADHD, developmental delays, play therapy, and parent education.

Michelle Byars is a certified yoga instructor and developmental movement teacher specializing in working with children in the autism spectrum, with anxiety disorders and learning disabilities. Her training includes certification with YogaKids and Yoga for the Special Child. She has worked with various institutions including the public school system, private schools, occupational therapy and psychology offices, for the ARC of Orange County and for UNC Chapel Hill.
